It should come as no surprise that the scientific community has long focused on safe and effective scar removal treatments. Unsightly scars cause embarrassment, a lack of confidence and can be itchy and uncomfortable. Today, many researchers and doctors are looking at silicone as the best home scar removal treatment.

Scars are caused by a variety of things. Acne or chicken pox can cause small, red and bumpy scars. Surgery can lead to long, thin, raised scars and accidents can cause a wide range of scarring from small to very large. Unfortunately, there is often nothing that can be done to prevent scarring completely. Scars can be minimized, by proper surgical technique or care after an accident or injury, but in the end, it is likely some remnant of the accident or injury will remain in the form of a scar.

Traditional scar removal methods involve a variety of creams as well as surgery, but it wasn’t until researchers began to look at the healing properties of silicone that the scar removal industry really changed. Silicone scar removal works by allowing the scar and the surrounding tissue to effectively heal. It promotes moisture retention, critical to healing skin and helps to protect the delicate new tissue that begins to grow in place of the scar.

There are several different delivery methods available for silicone scar removal. The first is ointment or gel based. These somewhat greasy creams are applied directly to the scar. As the ointment wears off, it needs to be constantly reapplied. It is easy to apply directly to the effected tissue. While it does promote healing, many patients are uncomfortable with the cream based treatments because of the need to constantly reapply it. The second delivery method is the silicone sheet. These ultra thin and flexible sheets are placed directly on a scar. Not only is the healing medication easily delivered, the thin sheet offers the patient additional protection. Wind, clothing, dust and other irritants can impede healing and the silicon scar removal sheet effectively protects the tissue from all of these outside elements.

Silicone scar removal is a home based treatment method. Many patients are turning to this scar removal treatment instead of costly and often dangerous surgery. Laser scar removal and other surgical removal methods can be dangerous and are not guaranteed to work. There is even a chance that surgical removal will actually make the scar worse – not better. Patients who cannot afford, or do not want to risk, surgical scar removal are seeing a great degree of success with silicone scar removal.

At one time, a scar was something that a patient simply had to live with. Large burn scars or small acne scars were simply a fact of life. Today, science has afforded us the ability to quickly and effectively remove unsightly scars. If you are suffering from a large scar, even if other scar removal methods have not worked for you, consider trying silicone scar removal. It could change the way you look and feel about yourself.
